Although I am not a bass player, I have sold tons of bass to others. The secret is simple. Any bass instrument will only sound as good as you are.

Fender Precision is the way to go personally. ALso, the Schecter 5- string bass sounds really really punchy for slapping purposes aside from other styles of music. You can go from jazz to punk to funk.

Personally, the jazz bass is a good bass but not for slapping. It has a better bottom sound, more smooth whereas, Precision Fender is more crispier, more middle-of-the-range type sound which is what you want. You want a heavy slapping sound, but, when you pluck the higher register, you want the bite.
