How would you get a Telecaster to sound like a Jazzmaster?
I've never been able to find a guitar that plays as good as my telecaster, but i don't really have a use for that twang anymore.
Has anyone had any experience putting JM pickups or p90s in a tele?
did it work? any other advice on getting closer to that tone (besides "buy a jazzmaster" or "you can't do that")
This is a tough one. The electronics, the size of the bodies and the vastly different woods just make these two guitars sound so radically different. I know you don't want an answer like that..
BUT...
Having said that however, I think it would be a really cool project to put two Lollar Jazzmaster single coils in a tele. This may prove a little harder to do because of the metal bridge plate on a tele, but it's possible I suppose (with a little work on that bridge plate, or just a new bridge all together - maybe a stop tailpiece with an adjust-o-matic or tune-o-matic). I sure you would have to do some routing out of the pickup wells on the body of the tele however. I have never heard of anyone putting JM coils (they're not P-90s) in a tele. A buddy of mine does however only play tele's and replaces all his neck pickups with P-90's. They sound great, so maybe that would be an alternative.
Here's an idea, what about Jaguar pickups? Those would be small enough to fit into a tele body. But whatever you do, get Lollar pickups, I think those are going to work the best, especially for Fenders.
I hope I was of some help.
Good Luck
