Switching Car Insurance And Mobile Phone Provider Stays High Amongst Consumers

Consumers have been advised to examine their household bills and switch their service providers if they believe they can save money.

Survey results released by the National Consumer Agency have shown that switching mobile phone and car insurance providers remains the most likely cause of action for consumers at 21 per cent of all service providers switching.  Where people do their main grocery shop was third at 15 per cent.

Overall rates of people swapping service providers were down, but there had been an increase in the number of consumers changing their electricity service provider.

The National Consumer Agency believed that households' aiming to get a better deal was the main feature for 75 per cent of people who had switched provider already, plus 79 per cent of consumers said they were receiving a better or similar service since they had switched.

The National Consumer Agency said they were planning to launch an aid that would allow people to compare their household spending against the national average.  

The organisation revealed its latest survey findings showing that the switching of service providers had fallen by 8 per cent in the last six months.  

Chief executive of the National Consumer Agency, Ann Fitzgerald, indicated that 16 per cent of consumers intended to switch their car insurance provider, whilst 10 per cent planned to change their mobile phone and electricity supply providers over the next 12 months.

Ms Fitzgerald said, "We would advise people not to be lackadaisical about switching and to examine their household bills to compare the alternative options on a regular basis. Don't put off what you can do today if you can make savings now. In the current economic climate, many service providers have become more competitive and we are urging Irish consumers to vote with their feet by switching to get the best bang for your euro. There is value out there for quality services and savvy consumers will reap the benefits."

The number of people who found the process of switching their provider difficult was also down to just 3 per cent, with almost four-fifths of those surveyed saying they had found the process an easy one to follow.

Ms Fitzgerald said, "This indicates that service providers are striving to make the process of switching as easy as possible and this is good news for consumers."
