I respect your taste, but let's take a step back.

First: beginners need lessons with a good teacher. That's because beginners make mistakes--and playing instruments is a complicated activity so mistakes are easy. If you don't have someone who can watch you and correct mistakes in your arm, wrist, hand and finger position, then you will learn wrong and maybe limit yourself--and even worse, maybe get a repetitive motion injury. I have a friend--self-taught guitarist--who had carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists last summer, don't take that risk!

To find a good teacher, (1) try advertising on bulletin boards at nearby college music departments that offer guitar as a major--you might find a student who's cheap and good (2) go to the best music store in your town.

About a dozen lessons should be enough, after which you can continue lessons if you like or drop them and rely on learning from books, dvds, cds, other guitar players, and Guitar Player magazine.

Now, equipment. Regardless of looks, if the guitar doesn't FEEL good, you won't keep playing it. Go to a real music store (your local Guitar Center, Sam Ash, or privately owned shop) that will let you plug in and doodle on several models. Find those that feel really good under your fingers.

Then go shopping for price. Your Guitar Centers and Sam Ashes will have nice sales on a regular basis, and also consider a good used one from one of these stores. There's also http://www.musiciansfriend.com or http://www.musicyo.com and other similar online places. Don't overlook the scratch-and-dent sales and consider used if it comes with some guarantee.

Now, the most important things for sound are the amp-speaker, the pedals, and the pick-ups. You can replace pick-ups if the guitar needs them. To learn, any little practice amp will do, but for performance you'll want an amp that can really hammer for you. There's no universal set-up, you will need to do a lot of study and figure out what equipment is used by the guitarist you most admire and use that as a guide for what stuff to get, eventually.

One last bit for you--as a beginner, practice frequently for short times. Four 10-minute sessions daily will give you more progress than one 1-hour daily. As you make progress and learn more, you will want to extend time on some sessions, and eventually cut back on the number, so that you wind up practicing for an hour or two with no problems--that's essential for stamina (playing a gig is physically demanding!).
