Why do my "noiseless" pickups still hum?
I bought a used American Deluxe Fender Stratocaster and the pickup covers say SCN. I'm beginning to wonder if they are really SCN's under the covers. Does anyone know what may be the problem?
Bridget- They're not single humbuckers. They're called single coil. Humbuckers have two coils. But my SCN's are technically humbuckers though since they have one coil stacked on top of another. They just look like singlecoils.
I'm betting they're working just fine, I think you may have an issue with the guitar not being properly grounded/shielded. There is a great post out there called "quieting the beast" or "shielding the beast", something like that, (at guitarnuts.com? google to find it) that talks about the why's and how's of properly shielding and grounding your guitar... proper shielding and grounding means less interference, less noise, less hum, better sound.
That said, you may also have issues with dirty power or EMI interference from things like lights, computers, or even the amp itself if you play close to it. I don't know the specifics of your situation, but I can definitely say that in one room of my house all of my equipment is very noisy, but in another room its just fine. Frustrating, since that's the only room I really have space to jam in!!!
Anyways, if you aren't handy with a soldering iron and whatnot, take the guitar to a guitar tech and ask them to take a look at it, check the soldering to make sure the connections are good, and especially to see if they can have it properly shielded/grounded.
I should also mention that there are times where people get the brilliant idea to rewire their guitar without having an effing clue what they're doing.... there are ways that you can wire up a guitar and re-introduce hum (ie coil-tapping a humbucker, for instance), especially if they botch the job. Again, this is something I would have a guitar tech look at, if you aren't familiar enough with interpreting a wiring diagram.
Good luck!
Saul
