Is there a guitar pickup that is comparable to a bass pickup?

You know, as far as low and mid tones being (i don't understand tone lingo, sorry) really beefy and booming (get it?). Keeping in mind that I drop my guitar to B, I'm trying to replace the neck pickup with something that will give me tones like a bass, as my band has no bassist. I will be running this pickup to an output seperate from the bridge pickup with its own tone and vol. controls. The pickup will most likely be run to a bass amp, as I have only one guitar amp.

If anyone has a suggestion on a RAIL bass pickup, I think that'd probably work, too.

All non-retarded answeres are appreciated. Unless of course you are legally retarded, in which case, we're cool.

It's tough making a call like this - here's the deal. You don't want a pickup with a lot of mids, I would think, because that would add to the boominess, and that's not necessarily a quality that would be desirable in a drop tuning - I would think that you'd want articulation and clarity and a solid low end.

Hmmm. I've spent some time on the Seymour Duncan forums, and the recommendations usually revolve around the Seymour Duncan Full Shred, Duncan Custom, JB, and Alternative 8. All seem to do pretty well in terms of drop tunings, according to what members have said.

I've used the JB and Alternative 8, and I play in Drop C# (ie Drop D down 1/2 step). To me, while the JB is a pretty good sounding, versatile pickup, the bottom end is too flabby, and isn't ideal for power chording/rhythm. The Alt 8 is my favorite pickup right now, especially when coupled with a 1 Mohm pot. It has a similar sound to the JB - lots of warmth, picking dynamics, clarity under high gain, but it has a tighter low end and is actually even higher output. When compared side by side it owned the JB completely - I was shocked, I've always felt the JB was a pretty hot pickup already!

Okay.... but these are *only* for bridge pickups, sorry, I wasn't paying attention to your question.

Hmm. A nice fat warm sound, trying to get a bass-like tone.... my first inclination is to direct you towards the Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro, but I'm not sure if it's the best choice for you. A very "classic/vintage" sound, couples well with the JB and Alt 8. Think Slash. It doesn't specialize in those low chuggy sounds, it resonates higher up than the Alt 8, etc does.

DiMarzio D-Activator Neck... the D Sonic and D Activator pickups are built specifically for great clarity with drop tunings - so that's a direction I would probably look into. Get the neck model, though, whatever you do - it has a lower output, which means less magnet pull on the strings. This is important for a neck pickup, as less magnet pull = great string sustain! Don't worry about the volume, neck position pickups are louder than bridge pickups normally (it's a physics thing), so having a weaker magnet isn't an issue as far as balancing volume.

I've listed one of the websites I go to for pickups, etc. The prices are good, and pretty decent equipment - much of it on par with the name brands, too.

The second link is a website I haven't heard from, but have gotten decent reviews. Lots of different bass pickups, too, so there's a bit of variety for you to look at.

Third link is a good place to find reviews on pickups.

Honestly, if it was me, I would probably put an active single-coil from the first website in. That way its a nice strong signal... then run it into an octave pedal before going into a bass amp of whatever kind. That way you'll get a little bit of low end presence.

All that said, the right speakers can really accentuate your bottom end without having to go the separate pickup/bass amp direction... if you can get your hands on an extension cab with a 15" speaker (made for guitar, though... unless you can slave a bass amp from the guitar amp? hmmm.....), that should add a lot of low end to your guitar.

Now that I think about it, the ability to slave a bass amp to your guitar amp would be freaking awesome... alternatively, splitting your signal from the guitar, and running into into at least some EQ then into the bass amp... again, I like the octave pedal idea, although it might be better in the fx loop of the bass amp.... put that with a 15" speaker, and you should have all the low end chunk you would ever want!

.... I dunno ... I know my Mesa Boogie Tremoverb put out all kinds of bass, hooking a 15" cab to that would've worked just fine as is....

... The last three links show some speakers that I would consider. I even saw a reviewer who said explicitly that he used the Peavey 15" in an open-back cab with his guitar rig. The last link is a discussion about using 15" speakers.

Hell, I'm starting to think about it myself....

Good luck!
